CAPE HERMES - Transkei

CAPE HERMES LIGHTHOUSE – TRANSKEI

This lighthouse was established in 1890. It is situated on a headland on the southern side of the mouth of the St Johns River near Port St Johns. The lighthouse has an octagonal shaped tower which is 13 metres high, and is built out of granite blocks which were quarried nearby. Cape Hermes is named after HMS Hermes, the ship which undertook surveys of those waters at that time. The lighthouse keeper H. Mjoji, a Transkeian citizen has been in service for the past 30 years.
