SOUTH SAND BLUFF

SOUTH SAND BLUFF – TRANSKEI

The lighthouse was erected 149 years after the wreck of the Grosvenor off the Transkei coast. It is situated 100 km from Port St Johns on the S.W. side of the Umsikaba River; originally a 21 metre steel tower, now a circular masonry tower with a square platform upon which the light is housed. This was the first South African lighthouse to be converted to solar power. Not an easy one to get to when it rains as the sand road becomes rather muddy. .
