SEAL POINT - Cape St Francis

SEAL POINT – (Cape St. Francis)

Situated at the picturesque town of Cape St. Francis. The large beautiful bay was named St Francis by the early Portugese navigators. This lighthouse built in 1878 is the tallest masonry tower on the South African coast. The tower is 28 metres high, painted white and is 36 metres above sea level, the light is visible for 28 sea miles. This dangerous coast with reefs that stretch more than a kilometer out to sea, became notorious for wrecks namely the Noord, the Hope, the L’Argile and the Queen of the West and many more, making the erection of a lighthouse necessary. Besides being an important naigational aid, the lighthouse is a popular tourist destination with an adjacent tea room and an interesting rehabilitation centre for penguins.
