CAPE RECIFE - Algoa Bay

CAPE RECIFE – Algoa Bay

This was the first lighthouse to be constructed in the PE area and the fourth to be erected by the Cape Colonial government. It consists of a 24 metre octagonal masonry tower and is painted in black and white stripes. This lighthouse has a white flashing light with a range of 29 sea miles, and a red fixed sector showing over Roman Rock and warns mariners of the dangers of Thunderbolt reef and Roman Rock which have claimed many ships. Cape Recife is situated on the Southern Point of Algoa Bay on a rocky expanse named D’Urban, after Sir Benjamin D’Urban, the Govenor of the Cape Colony at the time, who supported the need for a lighthouse here. A military look-out and signal station were erected adjacent the lighthouse during the second world war and were later used as staff quarters, storage and garages.
