BIRD ISLAND
This lighthouse consists of a 26 metre square masonry tower painted red and white. The lighthouse supports two fixed white lights 3 metres above one another to give a bearing over the Doddington rocks, and a third red dioptic light. Bird Island is 58 km North East of Port Elizabeth and is the location of the wreck of the East Indian merchantman The Doddington in
1755. This lighthouse is only accessible by prior arrangement and then by boat or helicopter. Photo from "For the Birds" web site.
