THE HILL – Port Elizabeth
A beautiful octagonal white structure which served as a navigational aid for 112 years, originally 7 metres high but increased by 9 metres in 1929 as it was partially obscured by the 1820 settlers’ monument. The lighthouse is situated in the centre of Port Elizabeth in the Donkin Reserve (named after Elizabeth Donkin, wife of Sir Rufane Donkin, acting Governor of the Cape Colony). Although no longer used as a navigational aid (withdrawn in 1973 when Deal light took over) It is a majestic structure and popular with tourists, easy to find with great views from the top.
